In 1979, Virginia had just six wineries and only 286 acres devoted to wine grape production. Twenty-five years later, Virginia boasted 87 wineries and 2,380 acres growing wine grapes. By 2007, this remarkable growth rate translated into more than 130 wineries and almost 3,000 acres of vineyard.

Virginia Wineries and winemaking

Unbeknownst to some wine enthusiasts, even those living in the Commonwealth, Virginia wine has come of age. The Virginia wine industry has not only grown in size, but more importantly, the quality has increased significantly over the last decade. There are now more than 200 Virginia wineries and dozens of wine trails.

Over 60 different varieties of grape are cultivated in Virginia to make wine. In addition to the popular varieties of grape like Chardonnay, Cabernet France, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Viognier, you will also find the lesser known varieties including Verdejo, Vermentino and Nebbiolo thriving in the Northern Virginia wineries.

Many Virginia wineries offer classes in cooking with wine, winemaking, pruning vines, and food and wine pairings. In addition, the wineries often host their own unique celebrations of wine throughout the year, including summer cookouts, intimate dinners, winemaking demonstrations, barrel tastings, historical reenactments and open houses.

Grapevines in full bloom

Most of Virginia is considered wine country. All Virginia wineries are required to grow grapes on the property, so you’ll also be visiting various vineyards. The vineyards spread from the state’s peninsular to the eastern foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Each winery has its own unique character. Many of them are family-owned, so tastings tend to be relaxed, with tour guides who are eager to answer questions and share knowledge about how wine is made to make your experience as educational as possible.

Wine trails

With more than 20 established wine trails, some with more than 20 participating wineries, you are sure to find something to match your palate. Tasting trails can be found in every region, so you get to enjoy the natural beauty of the state as you move along. A typical Virginia wine trail allows you to sip your way across the Commonwealth, experiencing everything from Alvarino to Viognier. You can also include an exclusive winemaker’s dinner or festival to your trail pursuit.

Virginia wine country has a lot more to offer than wine tasting. There are plenty of fun activities to learn, see and do. You can visit the different historical landmarks along the wine trails, but in some cases, history is served along with your wine.
