Earlysville VA, In A Nutshell

Earlysville is found in Albemarle County in Virginia. It is an unincorporated community, meaning that it does not have a municipal authority governing it. It is also not a census designated place, therefore the regular collection of population data is not slated for Earlysville. It is located about 9 miles away from Charlottesville, towards the north. Earlysville, although small, has a business district with the typical amenities including a grocery store, a restaurant and some retail stores.

History

Earlysville was named after John Early, who bought approximately 1000 acres of land in 1822. The portion of land that he bought comprises a substantial portion of the town. Michie Tavern, one of the historical landmarks in Albemarle County, was first established in Earlysville in 1784 before it was moved to Monticello. Michie Tavern was the social joint of the community and where the community would get food supplies as well as accommodation for those in transit. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Places To Visit

There are several historic structures located in Earlysville. One of them is the Earlysville Union Church. It was constructed in the year 1833 using a very simple design. It was an interdenominational church and was used by Baptists, Methodists as well as Presbyterians up to some point in the early 20th century. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Another historic place to visit in Earlysville is Longwood, which consists of a home and farm. It was built in 1790 with several additions in later years. Art lovers will be amazed by the hand crafted artwork found at Mud Dauber Pottery where Suzanne Crane, a famous potter, does what she loves. Here, visitors get the opportunity to view and purchase stoneware, dinnerware, and other hand-made ornaments.
