Keene is an unincorporated community within Albemarle County of Virginia. Unincorporated communities like Keene are usually administered as part of other administrative divisions. According to the census that was held in 1990, Keene had a population of 10 people, consistent with the fact that is quite a small and sparsely populated area.
The small nature of Keene made it the perfect getaway for President Theodore Roosevelt and his family when he was the president of the United States. There is a cottage called Pine Knot located on a 15-acre piece of land. His wife purchased it with the intention of making it the place where their family could have some private time outside the walls of the White House in Washington D.C. Pine Knot is now a historic site where tourist families get to relax.
One of the landmarks of Virginia is located in Keene. It is known as Christ Church Glendower, an Episcopal church built in 1831. Visitors interested in ancient building designs will be delighted to explore this church in its Roman Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 1971.
There is another historic site in Keene known as Plain Dealing, a home shaped in the letter “H”. It was built in the year 1787 and was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Yet another historic home in Keene is called The Rectory which is also referred to as “Dyer’s Store and Plain Dealing”. It was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
