Montpelier is just twenty-five miles northeast of Charlottesville. The home of America’s fourth President, James Madison, Montpelier is historically rich. Aside from the gardens, galleries and hands-on activities you will find at Montpelier, there are three premier wineries to round out your visit!
Early Mountain Vineyards was voted the number one tasting room in America by USA Today in 2016. Farthest north of the three wineries, this vineyard and winery is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They even host a “Best of Virginia” program featuring a specially curated list of wines from all across Virginia!
Barboursville Vineyards is home to the Landmark Ruins, a masterpiece of architectural design by Thomas Jefferson. They offer guided tours on the weekends that highlight the estate’s history and winemaking processes. They also feature a northern Italian-inspired Palladio Restaurant and romantic 1804 Inn & Cottages.
Horton Vineyards is a great spot to check out both for their wines and for the fun events hosted there. Last year, Horton Vineyards was home to a Food Truck Battle, Summer Celebration and a Junk Food Pairing, just to name a few.
